The Neonatal unit at King’s Mill is an 18 cot unit, with 3 intensive care cots, 6 high dependency and 9 special care cots. The number of babies cared for varies depending on the staffing levels and the dependency of the babies.
The unit cares for babies from 23-24 weeks gestation to 40+ gestation for a variety of reasons, and in support of the midwifery staff and transitional care. Surgical babies are transferred to Nottingham units via their retrieval team.
The aim of the unit is to deliver family-centred care, giving support to all family members for the time their baby is nursed on the unit and for a time following discharge.
On the unit there is an Infant Feeding Advisor, who works closely with the Neonatal staff, who is working towards the Family Friendly Initiative.
The unit is part of the Trent Neonatal Network has strong links with the regional NNU and smaller units included in the Network and receives support and shared information through this set up.
